What are some enigmatic riddles of Yorkshire, and what is the best way to experience the wonders of England's largest county?  Well, we will whet (wet) your appetite with this taster, and let you receive the full entrée of mystery and wonder when you travel on your next UK adventure!

1. Would you like to retrace the steps of Bram Stoker and visit Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast?

A famous writer used St Mary's Churchyard, the Abbey Ruins, and the town's 199 steps as settings for his macabre Dracula novels. Some structures in a more ruined state than others, the Abbeys, which include Fountains Abbey and Bolton Abbey, are witnesses of a checkered history of survival in remote locations.

2. Would you like to discover adventure and experience the Yorkshire Dales as James Alfred Wight?

James Alfred Wight, a veterinary surgeon who wrote under the pen name 'James Herriot’ published his novels about animals and their owners which in turn led to his writings being featured in a subsequent TV series, All Creatures Great and Small. Of course, all his experiences related in the novels are all based on his Yorkshire Dales’ adventures.

3. Would you like to solve the unknown mysteries of Ingleton?

Did you know that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of the famous 'Sherlock Holmes', spent much of his teenage years visiting his mother and siblings in the Ingleton area when he was at boarding school in a nearby town? It is thought by many that the character of Sherlock Homes was inspired by Conan Doyle's time in this corner of the Yorkshire Dales, where a reverend named Sherlock was in service at the village church.

4. Would you like to explore mysterious villages with a history of smuggling and quaint harbors on the coast such as Staithes or Robin Hood’s Bay?

Stroll through the market towns such as Helmsley, Leyburn or Richmond with its traditional squares and independently owned shops and cafes.  This area once frequented by smugglers and gangsters in the early 18th century, is replete with aged stories of nefarious criminals illegally shipping goods despite the futile efforts of the customs officers to suppress the endeavor.

5. Would you like to hear about the Secrets of York? ... if these ancient walls could just talk?

The ancient walled city of York, with its 13th century Gothic cathedral, its York Minster, and it's Roman background, boasts of many untold stories of the past. If its walls could talk, they would whisper and share the many stories and events that have taken place as history unfolded. Even more, visit the North Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales; explore two National Parks, and their well-kept villages! Many of the villages have quintessentially English country pubs and authentic Bed and Breakfasts, ready to serve your traveling needs.
